President’s Message I have heard a question repeated over the years: "Why become a member of the Gillette Woods Association?" Let me offer a few of my thoughts regarding the question. The current Board
of Directors has been diligent in their duties to the Gillette Woods
Association and Association Members. While in its 65th year, the Gillette
Woods Association does not require a great deal from its Board of
Directors. This is a result of many factors including a lack of common
property like a clubhouse or swimming pool, or even private roadways to
maintain. The Board's primary purpose as stated in the original charter
is "to protect and promote the interests of owners of property in the
tract known as Gillette Woods". Article 1 of our by-laws continues to say
that "In addition, the Association serves as a way for Gillette Woods
residents to communicate, socialize, and generally enjoy the ambience of
Gillette Woods". The ambiance of Gillette
Woods. As resident or property owner, you know to what that refers. It is a
sensory (shall I say sensual) thing you can feel and yet cannot put your
finger on. It is a combination of history and place, within the context of a
community abutting both a village and a mountain wilderness. It is a passion. Gillette Woods is not
entirely built out, but it is close. That fact coupled with the fact that
we have been living in a historic recession since October of 2008, means that
we have not seen a lot of activity in terms of new construction or even major
additions. But this condition will certainly change over the coming years. For
it is my opinion that Tryon, and especially Gillette Woods, will be one of the
most desirable places to live in one of the fastest growing regions in the
country. This is reflected in the retention of home values in Gillette Woods
over the last couple of years compared to surrounding areas, as reported by our
realtor liaison on our Board. Having an Association to help protect the value of
our property is critical. Conversely, if we maintain the community of our neighbor-
hood, by striving to communicate and relying on a sincere social network, we can
work to positively affect property values by just being the best place in which
to live. I encourage anyone who
has a passion for the place they live to consider being a part of the effort
to maintain the value of this special place. If you are a member, volunteer for
one of the standing committees or consider being a Board member. If you are not
an Association member then please become one. Think of it as one of the least
expensive ($10) social clubs you can join! Please stand invited one and
all, to our Gillette Woods Association Annual Meeting and Spring Social, from 5:00
to 7:00 p.m. on May 1st at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church on Melrose Ave. The
business meeting will be followed by a social complete with hors d'oeuvres,
wine/beer and other refreshments. If you cannot make it, please complete and mail
the membership renewal/application on the reverse of this newsletter. Thanks for
your support! |
